How to get your brand mentioned by ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity

By Nicolás Cómbita · SEO & GEO Consultant · Updated July 2026

Ask ChatGPT for «the best [your category] in [your market]» right now. If your brand isn’t in the answer, you have a visibility problem in the fastest-growing search channel — and most of your competitors haven’t noticed yet. This is the practical playbook I use to fix that, the same one I implemented for national media in Latin America.

How AI engines actually pick brands

ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews don’t invent recommendations. They synthesize them from three sources: their training data (what the web said about you historically), live retrieval (what ranks and is crawlable today) and structured signals (how machine-readable your identity is). That means GEO is not a trick — it’s making your brand the easiest, safest entity for a model to cite.

The six moves that matter

1. Be a clear entity. Your name, what you do, where, and your proof points must be consistent everywhere: your site, LinkedIn, Google Business Profile, directories. Models cross-check; inconsistency kills citations. Schema.org markup (Organization/Person, sameAs) is your machine-readable ID card.

2. Publish citable claims, not marketing copy. «Leading provider of solutions» is uncitable. «We took a national outlet from 0 to 1.22M monthly organic users» is a fact a model can quote. Numbers, dates, named methods — that’s what generative engines lift into answers.

3. Answer questions in question shape. AI answers map remarkably well onto content already structured as question → direct answer → evidence. FAQ blocks, definition-first paragraphs, comparison tables. Write so a two-sentence extract stands alone.

4. Keep ranking in classic search. Retrieval-augmented engines lean heavily on pages that already rank. GEO without SEO is a roof without walls — authority and rankings remain the price of admission.

5. Open the door to AI crawlers. Check your robots.txt for GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended. Blocking them may be a valid editorial choice for publishers — but for a brand that wants visibility, it’s self-sabotage.

6. Ship an llms.txt. The emerging standard gives AI systems a curated map of who you are and which pages matter. It takes an afternoon and puts you ahead of 99% of sites. This site runs one — see it live.

How to measure it

Build a prompt panel: the 20–30 questions a buyer in your category would ask. Run them monthly across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity and log two things — are you mentioned, and are you cited as a source. That share-of-voice trend, next to AI-referral traffic in your analytics, is your GEO scoreboard.

The honest caveat

Nobody can guarantee placement inside a generative answer — anyone promising that is selling smoke. What you can control is being the most machine-legible, most verifiable, most cited-worthy brand in your category. That’s engineering, not luck.
